Options abound for camouflaging flat panel TVs

From the Shreveport Times

by Devin White

 August 7, 2010

When Eric and Heather Muslow, of Shreveport, were decorating their condo, they knew a large black hole couldn’t be the first thing people saw when entering their home.

“We didn’t want a big TV to be the main decorating piece, so we bought a bookcase lift system to hide the TV,” Heather said.
The Muslows aren’t alone.
In the last decade, flat screen TVs have skyrocketed in popularity, challenging decorators and interior designers to create new ways of hiding and displaying the wide, dark pieces.
The Muslows decided on a bookcase lift system controlled by a remote from Ethan Allen.
“When the TV is hidden, you still have a place to display knickknacks and books,” Barbara Colvin, interior designer at Ethan Allen in Shreveport, said. “The TV doesn’t monopolize the entire wall like it has for so long, and plus it’s not quite as deep either.”
Lift systems come in a variety of disguises including a dresser or chest of drawers for the bedroom or a buffet table for the living room. At Ethan Allen, prices range from about $3,400 to $4.400.
According to Heather Muslow, people don’t even realize there’s a TV in the bookcase.
“You cannot tell there’s a TV in there. Everyone who looks at it says ‘there’s a TV in there?’” she said.
Some people opt to mount their flat panel TVs and hide them with rolling tapestries or moving pieces of art.
Tapestries are attached to a mechanism that retracts it to reveal a TV. When viewers are done watching, all they have to do is press a button, and the tapestry rolls back down.
“We have to send the tapestry to the company, and then they install everything on it,” said Sandra Wood, designer with Hudson House Interiors in Shreveport. “They make the rod fit the tapestry, put the display brackets on the front and then put the censor on it with the remote and ship it back to us.”
Wood says any tapestry can be used, but installation can be costly, averaging about $1,000.
According to Jimmy Mays, manager of Wright’s Sound Gallery in Shreveport, motorized artwork is another stylish way for people to conceal their TV. Similar in function to the mechanized tapestry, any artwork can be used and is controlled using a remote.

Internet Ready A/V Receivers

Integra’s new line of audio video receivers further blurs the line between the computer and the stereo system. Starting at the model DTR-40.1 ($999), Integra adds an ethernet connection for advanced networking capabilities for streaming content from Pandora, Rhapsody, vTuner, and Sirius Internet Radio services.

Basically, take one of these receivers home and plug in an ethernet cable. If you don’t have an ethernet cable at the receiver location, run one from a router or modem nearby. You now have access to Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius Internet Radio (you wont have to struggle with the satellite antenna on the windowsill!), and best of all vTuner by Integra. vTuner is an internet radio tuner that finds not only all of your local AM/FM stations, but stations AM/FM from all over the world, internet based radio stations (ex: Radio Margaritaville), and much more. Here comes the icing on the cake. Once you’ve plugged in the ethernet cable, this receiver is on your home network. It now sees all other computers on your home network, and can play music files from any computer, wired or wireless, including iTunes accounts.

All models are compatible with Windows 7 and are certified with DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) version 1.5, ensuring optimal compatibility with other network-enabled equipment throughout the home. Finally, all models but the DTR-40.1 receiver also include USB connectivity, further increasing the streaming audio options from either personal computers or USB-enabled portable devices.
